The first ten minutes decide whether the damage stays on one floor or reaches your downstairs neighbour.
1. Close the main valve
In an apartment the main valve is usually by the water meters in the bathroom or under the kitchen sink. In a house, look in the utility room or meter pit. Turn it clockwise until the water stops.
2. Switch off the power
If water has reached sockets, lights or appliances, switch off that room’s breaker at the panel. Don’t touch any electrical device while standing on a wet floor.
3. Collect the water
Towels, buckets and a mop. The faster the water leaves the floor, the less chance it soaks into the ceiling below.
4. Tell your downstairs neighbour
Even if no water is visible, go and ask. Neighbours often spot a stain on the ceiling before you see how far the damage goes.
5. Photograph everything
Your insurer will ask for photos before repairs. Capture the leak, the wet floor, damaged furniture and the water meter reading.
6. Call us
Tell us the address, what is leaking and whether the main valve is closed. We help arrange a plumber as soon as possible.
